The Student Scholarship

The Hanover Area Management Association, Inc., a non-profit organization, has established a $1500* scholarship to help finance higher education for a young adult (17-21 years of age) of its member companies. The scholarship committee judges will select the winning essay. The decisions of the judges are final. The scholarship winner is announced April of each year, with the monetary award dispersed at the beginning of the fall term. The association reserves the right to present no awards or to split the award between equally qualified eligible recipients. Information is distributed to member companies, individual members, and local school guidance offices.

The scholarship is awarded without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, disability, or national origin or other protected category. The scholarship committee votes on numbered essays with all identifying individual information deleted. No member or officer will play a part in the selection if they have a relative entered in the contest.

*The amount of the scholarship is determined each year by the HAMA board of directors.

Eligibility

Contestants must be a traditional student who is planning to enroll in a full-time course of study at an accredited post secondary education program (including a technical institution) in the fall of the year and be a resident of South Central PA or Northern MD. If the first place winner defaults, the 2nd place winner will be awarded the scholarship, providing the same documentation is presented. The decision of the scholarship committee is final. Eligible contestants must also meet the following qualifications:

  • • The student must be employed, full or part time, at a HAMA member company, OR
  • • The student has a parent, step-parent, grandparent, legal guardian, or sibling who is an individual HAMA member or is employed at a HAMA member company
  • • NOTE: If you have previously applied, you ARE eligable to apply again.

Essay Topic

Contestant must submit an essay of a minimum of 500 to maximum 1,000 words on the topic – "Discuss a challenge, set back, or failure that you encountered, how it affected you and what you learned from that experience."

Format Rules

Contestants must follow the Format Rules on the reverse side of the application form to be eligible to win the essay contest. Contestants who do not follow the rules will be disqualified. Judges will use the selection criteria for judging entries.

Deadline

Essays must be received or postmarked no later than March 13, 2020. E-mail or mail essays to:

The scholarship committee judges will select the winning entry. The decisions of the judges are final. The scholarship winner is announced in April with the monetary award dispersed through December. The association reserves the right to present no awards or to split the award between equally qualified eligible recipients. Information is distributed to member companies and individual members.

The scholarship committee votes on numbered essays with all identifying individual information deleted. *The amount of the scholarship is determined each year by the HAMA board of directors. The award will be up to $1500 for a course(s) of study (not reimbursed by your company) through December 2020. (It could be more than one class.

Eligibility

Contestants must be adults who are planning to enroll in a course of study (full or part-time) at an accredited post-secondary education program (including a technical institution) and be a resident of South Central PA or Northern Maryland. Eligible contestants must also meet the following qualifications:

  • • The student must be a member of Hanover Area Management Association or employed by a Member Company
  • • The student must provide a document from their company showing that none of the requested funds (up to $1500) will be reimbursed.
  • • NOTE: If you have applied for this previously, you ARE eligible to apply again.
If the first-place winner defaults, the 2nd place winner will be awarded the scholarship, providing the same documentation is presented. The decision of the scholarship committee is final.
